Day 3 we were out for the whole day and took a picnic lunch with us.
We headed off on a loop to La Chaise Dieu and back.
We headed across the lanes stopping to look at the Chateau where General Lafayette, who helped the Americans in their War of Independence, was born.
We then climbed through the woods onto the high Plateau, where we had our picnic beside a beautiful small lake.
After lunch we continued to La Chaise Dieu, passing by fields of wild flowers.
We returned by the remote chapel of La Trinité and the ruined Chateau at Domremy
Thursday was a rest day, and was spent at the market and Langeac and visiting Le Puy en Velay.
Then on Friday we explored the Gorges of the River Allier, with some challenging lanes and long climb on loose rocks and traveling as far south as Prades, before climbing the narrow and twisting Pass of Sourges onto the high plateau and then crossing to Pebrac.
Here we forded the stream and climbed to the Croix de Fer where we met a shepherd returning for the night with his flock before descending to Langeac and then returning to Villeneuve for another excellent meal at the Hotel.
