Christmas tour 2004

December 28th 2004 saw the start of our 3rd Christmas tour. Gary, Marie and family came again from Eire in their Discovery, Roy and Christine returned in their well travelled TD5 110, and Phil and Emma were here again in their 50th Anniversary 90. Andrew and Paula came with their family in a 110 TD5 crew cab, Dave came in a very nice NAS 90 soft top, and Scott and Barbara, two Americans working in the UK came in a Land Rover Series 3 Truck cab hybrid, with a newly fitted 2.8TDi.

We all met at Lesdain for Dinner on Tuesday evening and on the Wednesday morning set off onto the lanes. It was a lovely sunny morning, but after some heavy rain during the preceding days, the lanes were quite muddy and slippery.

We continued through the lovely winter countryside, with the vehicles getting muddier by the minute, stopping for coffee in the Café in Villers Guislain, and then having lonch on the edge of the Bois de Gauche, where Tanks were hidden in 1917 prior to the Battle of Cambrai.

During the afternoon we covered some more muddy lanes, stopping several times to removes tree branches which the previous weeks gales had blown across the tracks, before finishing with an after dark drive across the lanes to finish at the Bon Avis.
Then after refuelling the V8s, and a change of clothing, it was back to Lesdain for the evening meal. It was a lively evening with everyone getting to know each other, and before we knew where we were it was midnight, and time to head back to the Hotel and the B&B.

The next morning the weather had changed again and we set off under grey skies and drizzle, which although not very pleasant at least kept the lanes very slippery. Discoveries, with smaller tyres than the Defenders can sometimes have a ground clearance problem, and Garry got stuck in a rutted lane, but with a couple of extra people bouncing on the back, he was soon moving again.

After lunch, we continued on a series of very slippery lanes, some with nice adverse cambers on them as we looped round the north of Cambrai.

New Year's Eve morning we set off again towards the east. At Fontaine le Pire we stopped for coffee, filling their parking area completely.

We continued by some nice lanes with some quite difficult rutted climbs to a sheltered lane where we stopped for lunch.

As it was getting dusk we stopped to clean lights and number-plates before heading back to the Hypermarket for last minute shopping and then heading back to Lesdain for the New Years Eve party.

At midnight, after a small firework display we toasted the New Year with Champagne followed by the traditional Ice Cream Yule log.
Then in the early hours, it was time to go back to the Hotel and the B&B.

The 2005 Christmas tour will start on December 28th.
