Christmas break photos 2002

11 off road vehicles made their way to Lesdain for our Christmas tour. 3 highly modified Suzukis, a Defender 90, a Defender 110, a Discovery TDI, a Range Rover 4.6 HSE, and an 88 Hybrid came from England. A Defender TD5 came from Norway, a Discovery TDI travelled from Eire, and a French Discovery TDI also joined us.
The first evening they all came to Lesdain, except for poor Gary, on his way from Eire, who was still stuck on the M6 near Birmingham. They all managed to park in our yard, and then came into the house for introductory drinks followed by Dinner. During the evening the conversation and laughter level rose as people got to know each other, and swopped stories about their vehicles and experiences.

The next morning, in the pouring rain, we all met in the huge courtyard of the Bonavis. The two groups, one with Alec and the other with Eric then set off on the lanes which were extremely muddy after nearly 3 weeks of continuous rain. Those without Mud Terrain tyres soon found themselves sliding around, and several soon needed a tow. Andy and Caroline, who were here in the summer, had fitted a set of Colway Mud Terrains to their Range Rover had no problems.

The Suzukis which were all fitted with Bronco Grizzly Claw tyres kept asking when they were going to need to engage four wheel drive! And to prove the point, one parked on a 45┬░ slope when the 2 groups met!

Terje, whose Defender with the green number plates is pictured behind the Range Rover, had to travel from Norway on Snow tyres as it was snowing heavily in Norway, Sweden and Denmark on his 1400 km journey to Lesdain. The treads of the snow tyres quickly filled up with mud and he found it found it hard going, even with traction control, but he kept smiling.

The rain stopped soon after we started that morning, but the sky remained heavy and threatening. The tracks were exceptionally slippery as we have a clay chalk soil mix, which can be like driving on ice when it is wet.
After a picnic lunch, in the early afternoon, our tracks crossed and we stoppped to compare notes on the tracks. As we continued the sky got darker, and at dusk it started to rain again, and the last hour or so were in the dark. Picking our way through the deep ruts in the driving rain, stopping to wipe the layers of mud of the dimming headlights, made a challenging end to the days driving.
One of the Suzukis lost a set of brake pads towards the end of the day, but a quick trip to "Feu Vert", the French equivalent of Halfords got them a set of pads for a Nissan Micra, which with a little grinding down in our workshop were made to fit, just in time for them to sit down to dinner with the others.
Gary and his family were enjoying themselves, and one of their boys asked me if I had been stuck during the day. When I replied that I had not, he said "Well you haven't had as much fun as us!"
