Channel Hopping Winch Challenge December 2005

If anyone has photos from the event, especially in the caves, please send them to me, and I will post them on these pages

This weekend event was held at the fantastic off road site of the 5 Pillars in Northern France which we use for some of our weekend tours.

Late afternoon on December 9th 2005 the competitors were arriving at the Formula 1 Motel on the outskirts of Compiegne from the UK, Denmark and Holland. Some drove here, whilst others trailered their 4x4s or brought them on transporters. By late evening all had arrived and the hotel car park, much to the bemusement of the other guests, started to look like the start of a rally.

At 7.30 the next morning people were breakfasting and preparing to leave for the site as the sun came up reflecting off the heavy frost which had covered all the vehicles during the night. Then the first of three convoys set off to the site, about twenty kilometres along the main road. Some went to fill with fuel at the supermarket about 500 metres from the hotel, and just after nine o'clock we were all in the park at the site and munching on bacon sandwiches and drinking tea or coffee.

Mick climbed onto the bonnet of his Land Rover to give his briefing and explain how the event was to be run. All the team numbers were put into a hat, and the teams were drawn. The idea was that teams of different abilities would be teamed together, and the timing for each stage would be from the first car onto the stage, until the last one to finish. Thus the whole team would work together to get all the vehicles through the stage.

After the scrutineering, it was off to the start of the stages.

As we had not known in advance the calibre of the entrants, some found that the first days course was a little on the tame side, we made it a lot tougher on the the second day. At the end of the event all were in agreement were unanimous in saying that they had spent a great weekend.

I have posted below many of the photos of the event, and as they arrive I will add more.
